My friend's grandfather passed away and she inherited his 2009 Toyota Prius. It has around 145,000 miles on it. I just drove it to the store and back since I've never ridden in or driven a hybrid car. It was...interesting.
The brakes were really "grabby" feeling - I guess because of the regenerative braking it does. The consumption info screen was really nifty, and cruising through the parking lot on electric power only made it feel like I was driving a golf cart. It was slow, obviously, but not overly painfully so. I could keep up with traffic just fine. That being said, I could feel the total absence of "fun." Nothing was geared towards driver involvement like things seem to be in my Mazda. In fact, in the Prius, I think keeping the driver as uninvolved as possible was a key goal.
Driving a CVT is still weird to me and I am still not really a fan of them. Oh, and it does this annoying beep when in reverse. Sounds just like a U-Haul truck's backup alarm. I'd have to do something about that, for sure.
So, there you have it, Oppo. My first experience with the anti-Jalop car.

I'm pretty sure the beeping is more for pedestrians rather than the driver since it's so quiet

But I don't think you hear the beeping outside of the car. It comes through the stereo speakers.

Huh maybe it's something else then. I just thought I read somewhere they had some sort oof pedestrian alarms so people know when you're moving even when you're doing so in full electric mode

beeping or blaring alarms does nothing to warn Deaf people ha. I should know because I've almost gotten run over by backing cars. In my defense if anyone says why didn't you pay attention. These said cars were backing up at 87 mph +/-15 mph.
GGeez.
But anyway, I've ridden in a Prius. If mental issues were cars, the Prius would be depression.

my mom owns a prius. The beep is only inside the car and let's you know you are in reverse I guess. My mom bought hers new in 2004 and it has 245,000 miles on it right now with 0 major services done on it. No matter how much I hate it, I still respect the reliability.

The Prius has a lot of nerd out about, yeah. The amount of technology in it is cool, from drivetrain stuff to aerodynamics. It's just not a very fun car, though. Definitely one for people who think that a good car is one where you don't get any feedback from the controls...

Exactly how I feel driving my step dads Prius. Only drive it when I really want to drive and it's the only choice.

You can't. It's for the back up cam I think. Or to alert you you're in R

Cars backing up at 87 MPH? THIS NEEDS TO BE A SPORT!!!
On another note, I remember someone on the FP talking about how their dad owned a construction company and every time he would overshoot his construction sites massively, he'd throw it in reverse and do 50 MPH backwards to it. I believe it was an older F150

The feeling i get from them is how "base" model they feel. Seat's aren't comfortable. Ride is meh "this particular prius had low rolling resistance tires, big factor i'm sure). A lot of plastic used in them, which makes sense. Feels like an old crx without any pep.

It's to alert the clueless Toyota driver that he/she put the little lever to R...which by the way it doesn't stay there, so there's almost nothing visual to remind them they did it.

I was looking for a new commuter car a few years ago. I love electric drive and playing MPG games, so I thought I would like the Prius. My brother in law left his '11 with us for a week while they went on vacation and he told me to go ahead and use it all week if I wanted to, so I did...
Day one and two were kinda fun playing with the graphs and EV mode, but after that I got bored... Very Very bored. Other than that MPG graph, it could be the most boring driving car I've ever experienced. I'm glad I got to spend a couple extra days with it or I might have liked it!
A week later I test drove a Volt... Opposite end of the spectrum! It was responsive and had some handling and feeling! I was sold... Two years and 30,000 miles later and I'm still loving it!

My experience in a Prius was years ago before they were ubiquitous. The technology and how the technology was communicated to the driver impressed me. However, we need to remember that a car can't be everything, so performance and fun went out the window in favor of MPGs and nerdgasms.

This has been very true in the market, so far. But I think that's more to do with the OEM's assuming that enthusiasts won't even consider buying a car that's designed to save fuel.
That's changing though, M cars have turbos, a trio of hybrids are the fastest supercars ever, and some crazy South African dude just gave the whole world the D. The 3.2 sec to 60, super low center of gravity, adaptive suspension, wide tires, fat brakes, no gallons to the mile at all D.

We have a 2007 Prius that I like pretty well, surprisingly. Although ours doesn't have regenerative braking (afaik) and it's still quite grabby. And yes, that backup beep is a pain - not enough of a pain for me to kill it yet though lol.
